Motivation is an important step in the process of becoming a strong follower of Christ. Many of us have a difficult time differentiating between living for others and living for the Kingdom. We want to do good because good is what we are supposed to do, but we also like it when we are recognized for our piety, for our character.
Jesus, in the Sermon on the Mount, asks His followers to live above the recognition of men, we are to live for the recognition of God regardless of what the world will think of us. Thus our motivation to do right, to live in such a way that others will be pointed to the Kingdom, to be a light shining in the darkness, is because we love Jesus not because we like recognition of men. Sometimes as we live the righteous life, routine sets in. We see life from one hurdle to another, from passing one test to passing the next. However, our goal should never be just simply do right because it is the right thing, but because we are putting the Kingdom above everything else. It may seem like we are re-stating last week’s point of emphasis; however, there can be nothing further from the truth….motivation is important but so is priority. What do you hold in the most esteem? What has priority in your life? Family? Job? Extra-Fun-Stuff? Alcohol? Drugs? Material Goods (Cars, House, etc)? Priority in our life is above everything else and drives us to make decisions based on that priority. The peripheral items can get pushed to the side in order to make room for the priority. Thus, we can neglect areas of our life because we have placed something at the forefront. Even if you are not aware, we all have priorities. This week we are going to dig deeply into our priorities. We answer the questions...what is first in our life? How can I recognize my priorities? How can I swing my priorities toward the Kingdom? So, begin to pray for God to speak to you and reveal your priorities. Read Matthew 6:19-34 to prepare. Next post will be in the morning!
